| Flash Gordon
King Vultan is trying to electro-torture Flash while Dale watches. Princess Aura saves Flash and Doctor Zarkov revives him. 'Flash Gordon' is the only sound serial being preserved by the Library of Congress.
This is the Flash Gordon I watched growing up. There have been several remakes of Flash Gordon over the years but nothing compares to the original. I loved to watch Buster Crabbe as Flash Gordon defeat Ming the Merciless and fly around in that cool spaceship. Also what's up with the Hawkman and his man breast? I always thought that was weird. Special effects have come a long way since the first spaceship. I guess that adds to the beauty of these old films.
I once tried to imitate Flash Gordon by parachuting off our shed using a blanket. Somehow it didn't work out quite as well as I thought.
Ming the Merciless
When the heroic Flash Gordon and his friends land on the planet Mongo, they find it ruled by the evil Emperor Ming, a despot who quickly becomes their enemy. The capital of his empire is named "Mingo City" in his honor.
In addition to his army, Ming has access to a wide variety of science fiction gadgets, ranging from rocket ships to death rays to robots.
Though evil, he has his weaknesses, which include a desire to marry Flash's beautiful companion, Dale Arden. Ming's daughter Princess Aura is as evil as he is when the series begins, but is eventually reformed by her love for Flash, and later for Prince Barin of Arboria.
In the Flash Gordon serials of the late 1930s-era Ming was played by Charles Middleton.
Flash Gordon hit the airwaves in 1935, three years after Buck Rogers.
